Rufus Wainwright channels for the new opera by Puccini

Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright is known to navigate the border between classical and pop. Now his obsession with the opera for a long time led him to write one of his.

Wainwright has scored the music and wrote lyrics for his French debut of classical opera, "Prima Donna", which will have its preview in North America in June 2010, the enlightened Arts Festival in Toronto.

Wainwright said: "Prima Donna" contains elements of Puccini and Ravel, arias, duets and romantic melodies, but no hint of pop. Although the work may seem to diverge from his usual approach to multi-genre, is actually a faithful homage to his musical education.

"Opera is my religion," said Wainwright Billboard.com, noting that as at 14, he became fascinated by the genre.

"This is all I could hear, and that’s what I could understand. He gave me everything I needed at that time, and remains, in many ways," he said.

"Writing this work was as if I were writing a mass or a prayer to my god. It ’was a very spiritual for me."

Wainwright added that "the whole (work) came in one stroke. It ’was a complete picture. … I knew it was written, and I knew that would happen, and I knew that somehow, mysteriously, we increase.

Wainwright brought his composition from concept to production, but not without challenges and criticism. "A lot of people, especially in the classical music world, are disrupted, while the love of the public," he said. "I think that works, you must trust external relentless and unstoppable in her work to do."

Wainwright will perform during the night in New York City Opera opened on November 5.
