It is against the almighty Apple iPod is not an easy task, but Microsoft is giving all I have, with its impressive line of Zune media players, with capacities ranging from 4GB up to 120GB.
With a large screen, excellent sound quality (complemented by outstanding headphones), FM radio and support for multiple audio and video codecs, the Redmond, Wash.-based giant many are hoping that the two competing products side by side and choose for the Zune.
But if you know someone who already owns a Zune, you’re probably aware of the display of attractive, well-balanced audio and built-in radio, which is also in the large gymnasium to hear a TV broadcast. Oh, Zune owners can now "tag" a song you hear on the radio and the purchase of a CD-quality version at a later stage (in the U.S. at this time, however).
Here are a few things – and in that impressive – the Zune probably are not aware.
1. Games and books, oh my!
The latest Zune software (version 3.0), now allows you to play while on the go. In fact, you begin with two gifts included with the latest firmware update downloads: Hextic and Texas Hold ’Em. The Zune will also allow many to play a game and listen to your favorite songs, podcasts or audio book at the same time! Speaking of audio, Zune owners can now synchronize the books of the great library of titles at audible.com or overdrive.com.
2. Sharing is good
When you’re in the same room with other Zune listener – and no matter if you own a flash drive or hard disk based on the model – can be transmitted wirelessly to a song you like, that the recipient can listen to up to three times its Zune. This is a great way to be exposed to new music. No wonder why the tagline for the Microsoft Zune is "Welcome to the social."
3. Wireless synchronization
iPod owners are used to connect your player to a PC to transfer via the media. For some, this may be a laborious process, for connecting a USB cable to the back of a computer (perhaps under a desk), and you may have to unplug a USB device first. Whenever you have a wireless network, you can automatically synchronize your Zune player to your PC when you step in the door.
4. It’s in the cards
On the free Zune Social, the Zune online music community, you can easily create and customize a Zune Card. What is it, you ask? No, these are not Zune brand cards. These online cards can be embedded in various social networking sites like Facebook and other websites or blogs, which are automatically updated to show others what they are listening.
5. X (box) marks the spot
Xbox 360 owners who want to change your favorite video game soundtrack can play their own music stored on a Zune online – either through the media player connected to the console via its USB cable (included) or if you have a Wi – Fi network and an Xbox 360 wireless network adapter, you can configure your wireless Zune to play on your Xbox 360 (as a soundtrack or just use your TV or stereo speakers).
6. All music can be handled
While it ’is not available in Canada – yet – the Zune Marketplace is the online store to buy music from your Zune player. Sure, you can download the tracks at a time, as you can with Apple’s iTunes, but the service also offers something called a Zune Pass ($ 15/month), which allows you to fill your Zune with up to thousands of songs. In other words, you choose whether you want to consume their music a la carte or in one all-you-can eat buffet!
